LiftingLower Blepharoplasty Post-Operative Care: Expert Advice from a Board-Certified Surgeon

Views 17

Hello,
I’m Dr. Seung-Wan Tak, Chief Surgeon at Dr. Tak Plastic Surgery, located in Gangnam, Seoul. Our clinic specializes in under-eye surgeries, including lower blepharoplasty and under-eye fat repositioning.

Through my consultations with patients, one question frequently arises:

  • “Are there any specific precautions I should take after lower blepharoplasty surgery?”
  • “What can I do to recover quickly?”

As a board-certified plastic surgeon, I understand that patients are eager to know when they can resume daily activities and what steps they need to take for optimal recovery. Today, I’ll walk you through three key aspects of post-operative care after lower blepharoplasty surgery. With these tips, you can ensure a smooth and successful recovery.

About Dr. Seung-Wan Tak

Before we dive in, here’s a brief overview of my credentials to establish trust:

  • Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon (Certified by the Ministry of Health and Welfare)
  • Advanced Training at Nagasaki National University
  • AOCMF Facial Research Workshop Participant
  • Member of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons
  • Member of the Minimally Invasive Plastic Surgery Research Society
  • Member of the Eye Plastic Surgery Research Society

1. Precautions for the First Two Weeks

Lower blepharoplasty recovery varies by patient, but adhering to the following guidelines for at least two weeks is critical:

  • Two Weeks: This includes the first week post-surgery (before suture removal) and the following week (after suture removal).

Key Guidelines:

  1. Medication and Ointment: Take all prescribed medications and apply the recommended ointment diligently.
  2. Avoid Eye Irritation: Do not rub your eyes, use harsh makeup removers, or apply pressure to the eye area.
  3. Gentle Cleansing: Cleanse your face gently and pat dry to avoid leaving moisture around the eyes.
  4. Monitor for Swelling or Bleeding: If swelling, pain, or bleeding becomes severe, contact your surgeon immediately.
  5. Elevate Your Head: Avoid lying down for extended periods. Sitting or standing helps reduce swelling.

By following these steps during the critical two-week period, you’ll lay the foundation for a smooth recovery.

2. Managing Swelling

Post-operative swelling is a common concern for patients. While ice and heat packs are often recommended, I’m cautious about their use. Swelling, in fact, indicates that your body is healing effectively.

When your body sustains an injury, it sends healing agents to the affected area, expanding blood vessels to increase circulation. This natural response causes visible swelling, which is a sign that your body is recovering.

Why Avoid Ice Packs?

  • Ice packs can introduce moisture to the surgical area, increasing the risk of infection.
  • While cold compresses may reduce pain, they have minimal impact on swelling.

Best Practices for Swelling:

  • Most swelling subsides naturally within a few days of suture removal.
  • If significant swelling persists after one week post-suture removal, consult your surgeon for advice on using cold or warm compresses.

3. Minimizing Scarring

Lower blepharoplasty involves incisions under the lower eyelids, which may result in mild scarring. To minimize scars:

  1. Scar Ointments: Apply prescribed or over-the-counter scar ointments to promote healing and prevent infections.
  2. Sun Protection: Protect the scarred area from UV exposure for several months post-surgery. Prolonged sun exposure can lead to pigmentation or raised scars.
  3. Time and Patience: Initially, scars may appear as faint red lines but will gradually fade over six months, blending naturally with the surrounding skin.

Most scars from lower blepharoplasty are discreetly placed along the lower eyelid, making them less noticeable. However, diligent aftercare is crucial to ensure optimal healing.

Final Thoughts

I hope this guide has addressed your concerns about lower blepharoplasty post-operative care. By following these three key principles—maintaining proper precautions, managing swelling effectively, and minimizing scarring—you can recover quickly and confidently.
