Dr. Seung-Wan Tak, Chief Surgeon at Dr. Tak Plastic Surgery in Gangnam, Seoul, discusses lip reduction surgery, including the process, results, scars, and potential risks, while seated in the clinic's welcoming office environment.

Specializing in lip surgeries and philtrum procedures, I am here to share everything you need to know about lip reduction surgery—its process, results, scars, and potential risks.

Why Consider Lip Reduction Surgery?

Many patients visit me feeling that their lips are too thick or out of proportion with their facial features.

Here’s how thick lips might affect your overall appearance:

  • Facial Proportions: Thick lips can make the eyes or nose appear smaller, disrupting balance.
  • Visual Weight: Fuller lips may give off a heavier or less refined look.
  • Cultural Preferences: Especially among East Asians, thinner lips often harmonize better with natural facial structures compared to thicker lips.

For these reasons, non-invasive treatments like fillers or Botox cannot adequately reduce lip volume.

Non-invasive treatments like fillers or Botox cannot effectively reduce lip volume. Lip Reduction Surgery offers a safe alternative for achieving natural and proportional lips.

The solution? Lip Reduction Surgery—a safe and effective procedure to achieve natural, proportional lips.

The Procedure: Lip Reduction Step-by-Step

Who Is It For?

Patients generally fall into these categories:

  1. Upper lip is disproportionately thick.
  2. Lower lip is overly full.
  3. Both lips are thick, and the balance between them is uneven.

Dr. Seung-Wan Tak, wearing surgical attire, precisely performs a lip reduction surgery. The procedure involves detailed consultation and design to reduce lip volume proportionally, ensuring comfort under sedation and achieving a balanced, natural look.

How Is It Done?

  1. Consultation & Design

    • During consultation, I carefully analyze your lips' thickness and overall facial proportions.
    • We determine how much volume should be reduced to achieve your desired outcome.
  2. Surgical Process

    • Performed under sedation for comfort.
    • A small incision is made along the area where the upper and lower lips meet.

    • Excess tissue is carefully removed.
    • The incision is meticulously sutured to ensure minimal scarring.

The result? Thinner, natural-looking lips with better facial harmony.

What About Scars or Risks?

One of the biggest concerns about any surgery is the risk of scarring or complications. Let me put your mind at ease:

Scarring:

  • The incision is hidden along the natural crease of the lips, making scars virtually invisible.
  • Lip skin heals exceptionally well due to its thinness and rich vascular supply.
  • Any faint scars can be easily concealed with lipstick or gloss.

Scarring Concern: Lip Reduction Surgery minimizes visible scars as incisions are hidden along the natural lip crease and heal exceptionally well. Beautiful, refined lips after Lip Reduction Surgery. Lipstick or gloss can effortlessly conceal any faint marks.

Risks:

  • Lip reduction surgery has minimal risk because the lips lack major nerves or critical blood vessels in the incision area.
  • Healing is fast thanks to the lips' abundant blood flow, which promotes rapid recovery.

Before-and-After Results

Patients often achieve a dramatic yet natural transformation. Here’s what to expect:

  • Proportional Lips: Excess thickness is reduced, balancing your facial features.
  • Natural Appearance: Despite being thinner, the lips retain their natural shape and function.
  • Confidence Boost: Many patients feel their new lips enhance their overall beauty and self-esteem.

Recovery and Aftercare

Post-surgery, patients typically experience:

  • Mild Swelling & Bruising: Subsides within 1-2 weeks.
  • Quick Healing: Thanks to the lips’ vascularity, healing is faster compared to other areas of the face.

I recommend scheduling your surgery at least a week before any important events to allow time for recovery.

Common Questions

Is Lip Reduction Right for Me?

If you feel your lips overpower your facial features or simply wish for a more balanced appearance, lip reduction may be the solution.

Can I Combine It with Other Lip Surgeries?

Yes! Many patients combine lip reduction with other procedures like:

  • Cupid Line Lip Surgery: To enhance the wavy contour of the upper lip.
  • Lip Lift Surgery: To shorten the philtrum and increase the height of the upper lip.
