Hello!

Iโ€™m Dr. Seungwan Tak, the chief surgeon at Dr. Tak Plastic Surgery Clinic, specializing in philtrum and lip surgeries in Gangnam, Seoul.

Today, Iโ€™m going to give a comprehensive overview of philtrum reduction surgery.

Last week, I received a comment on my blog regarding the recovery time and scarring. This made me realize that patients are looking for more detailed information on these aspects. So, I decided to dedicate this post to philtrum reduction (internal philtrum reduction), and in my next post, Iโ€™ll talk about external philtrum reduction and lip corner surgery.

If you're concerned about the length of your philtrum, I highly recommend reading through this post!

Iโ€™ll share my insights and experiences from performing countless philtrum reduction surgeries, and also discuss industry standards and practices regarding lip surgeries.

Letโ€™s get started!

1. Philtrum Reduction Surgery Process and Cost

The first thing we should discuss is how philtrum reduction surgery works and the cost of it. If you're reading this post, you're probably already familiar with how philtrum reduction surgery is performed.

But just in case, hereโ€™s a brief summary:

Philtrum reduction surgery involves shortening the vertical length of the philtrum (the area between your nose and upper lip).

Before the surgery, we have a detailed consultation where we decide how much of the philtrum length should be reduced. Then, during the surgery, a small incision is made along the line under the nose, and the desired amount of skin is removed.

To maintain the natural movement of the philtrum, we alsoย loosen the muscles inside the area and carefully suture the inner and outer skin layers.

The surgery is performed under sedation anesthesia and usually takes 40โ€“50 minutes to complete.

The cost is generally between 1,200,000 KRW to 1,400,000 KRW (~$900 to $1,050 USD).

Please note that the price may vary depending on the clinic, and whether postoperative care is included. Itโ€™s best to inquire directly with the clinic.

2. Recovery Time and Scar Management After Philtrum Reduction Surgery

After philtrum reduction surgery, youโ€™ll notice sutures along the incision line under your nose. These stitches will be removed about one week after the procedure.

The swelling typically subsides within that week, and continues to reduce even after the stitches are removed.

Since this is not a surgery that involves altering the bone structure, recovery time is relatively short.

Now, letโ€™s talk about the important issue: scarring.

After the stitches are removed, some people may experience scarring that spreads, due to the skinโ€™s natural tendency to return to its original state.ย

To prevent this, I use specialized techniques to secure the incision and minimize scar formation.

Post-surgery, I recommend regular treatments such as scar injections, laser therapy, and even botox for the first 1-3 months to reduce redness and improve the appearance of scars.

While 6 months of continued treatment is ideal, most patients notice significant improvements after just 2 months of care.

For those who have concerns about the scar becoming firm or lumpy, I also recommend scar massage techniques to help break down the hardened tissue, both for aesthetic and functional reasons.

Philtrum reduction is a relatively straightforward procedure with few risks. Other than temporary bruising and swelling, there are usually no major side effects.ย

If you manage your scar care properly, it can fade to the point where itโ€™s nearly invisible!

I hope this post helped clarify your questions about philtrum reduction surgery, including costs, recovery time, and scarring.
